The MGM classic The Wizard of Oz will always be in my top ten favorite movies. Does anyone not love this film? It is truly timeless in its appeal. I’ve always felt that it should be left as is. It should not be changed, or redone, or tampered with in any way by anyone. (That would be much like redoing The Sound of Music into a live TV production and casting a popular country singer in role of Maria Von Trapp.) Which is why, I felt some skepticism about Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new production of THE WIZARD OF OZ that opens in Tempe at ASU Gammage this Tuesday.  I’m curious to see if it measures up, at least for me, to the movie.

Having expressed my concerns about anyone tampering with The Wizard of Oz, there are a couple of things that have led me to believe that my skepticism might be misdirected. First off, it sounds like this production has remained fairly true to the movie version. It was developed from the ever popular MGM screenplay and contains all the beloved songs from the Oscar®-winning movie score, all the favorite characters and iconic moments, plus a few surprises along the way, including new songs by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Secondly, the fact that it’s an Andrew Lloyd Webber production makes me hopeful that it’s going to be terrific, just like all of his other shows. Yes, I’m curious about how this show measures up to the movie. I have a feeling that it will more than measure up and I’m eager to see it.

THE WIZARD OF OZ opens at ASU Gammage on Tuesday, February 4 and will run through February 4. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit http://asugammage.com.
