Desertscapes  features black and white landscape photographs by Wayne Norton. He describes this exhibit  as a portrait of the American desert, through which he wishes “to question Man’s treatment of the desert and our existence there…” He describes his work as formal, graphic compositions and says “My concerns for the desert are serious but my artistic vision is often symbolic, whimsical, and even ironic.” The exhibit is included with paid museum admission. Blow Up at ASU Art Museum

THE ASU ART MUSEUM WILL BE CLOSED DURING THE MONTH OF JUNE Experience a few of the great acquisitions the museum received in 2015. Blow Up, an interactive piece by Scott Snibbe, messes with scale and incorporates breath, fans, technology and sound at the ASU Art Museum. There is the huge wild world of a painting by Stefani Gutheil, discovered in her Berlin studio and purchased for the museum by Director’s Council members Wan Kyun Rha and Andrew Kim, and further explorations into the painted imagination with stunners by Sandow Birk and Beverly McIver each given by long-term supporters of the museum. Museum is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday–Saturday; Closed: Sunday, Monday and holidays. (Additional educator hours by appointment: Mondays and before 11 a.m. Tuesday–Thursday)

“Breach: Log 16” showcases the work of Courtney Michele Leonard, an artist and filmmaker from the Shinnecock Nation of Long Island, New York. Leonard’s work explores the evolution of language, image and culture through mixed media pieces of video, audio and tangible objects. This exhibition is an exploration of historical ties to water and whale; imposed law; and a current relationship of material sustainability. Navigation lies within visual translation, acceptance and pursuit of process. Charting exists as a log of record, documenting and mapping each point where the surface breaks. “Breach: Log 16” catalogs the expedition, encounters and experiences. June 11 | Insect Specimen Jars with Dr. Sangmi Lee See some live specimens from ASU’s Hasbrouck Insect Collection at the School of Life Sciences and decorate an insect jar of your own.
