Tempe Healing Field

The Tempe Exchange Club continues a cherished tradition spanning more than ten years as they host their 11th Annual Healing Field flag display for residents of the greater Phoenix area. More than 3,000 U.S. flags will be displayed at Tempe Beach Park to remember and honor the victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks. Visitors may walk through the ordered rows of flags posted in solemn tribute at Tempe Beach Park from the 10th through the 15th of September. Visiting the field is an experience never to be forgotten, and each year the event offers many opportunities for sponsors, volunteers and visitors to experience an indescribable tribute.

The ASU Art Museum is the recipient of six new works by artist Andy Warhol, a gift from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. These original Warhol screenprints will be on view in the lobby of the ASU Art Museum until September 13, 2014. ASU Art Museum Hours Tuesday: During academic semesters 11 a.m. – 8 p.m.; Summer hours: 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Wednesday–Saturday: 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Additional educator hours by appointment: Mondays and before 11 a.m. Tuesday–Thursday Closed: Sunday, Monday and holidays The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts was established after Warhol’s death in 1987. In accordance with Warhol’s will, the foundation has given prints to many institutions across the country to ensure “that the many facets of Warhol’s complex oeuvre are both widely accessible and properly cared for.” In 2008, the ASU Art Museum received 155 photographs by Andy Warhol from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, part of the Andy Warhol Photographic Legacy Program, which donated over 28,500 photographs to educational institutions across the United States.

Summer of Love: Family, Friendship and Devotion

The Tempe Center for the Arts’s (TCA) summer family exhibition features colorful and endearing artworks about love created by local and national artists. Featured artworks include ceramic sculptures, botanical prints and drawings, original children’s book illustrations and contemporary paintings and installations. The exhibition will also feature historical and contemporary displays about symbols of love by the Desert Botanical Garden Archives, Tempe History Museum and Bobbie’s Flowers of Tempe. Featured artists will include Gene Almendinger, Marco Albarran, Denise Currier, Esmeralda Delaney, Wendy Hodgson, Molly Idle, Sandra Luerhsen, Frank Ybarra, as well as art students from local Tempe high schools. On June 20th, there will be a free public reception in the Gallery from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. Tempe Center for the Arts Hours are:  10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday and Friday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday Closed on Mondays

Walk-In Family Art Workshops at the TCA

Tempe’s newest comedy series brings the best Valley comics to the stage at the Tempe Center for the Arts. No food or drink minimums.  Recommended for ages 18 and older. Tickets for Tempe Comedy Concert Series shows can be purchased here. September 5th: Class Clowns Tony Vicich brings his long-running stand-up comedy show, Class Clowns, to TCA. This is the show where it all starts. Comics have gone from Class Clowns shows all the way to Last Comic Standing, Jimmy Kimmel Live and more.  See the show that has taken comics from their first stage experience to national prominence. September 12th: Boomer Nichols  Boomer Nichols has appeared on hundreds of stages nationwide from New York, New Jersey and Florida all the way to Arizona, New Mexico, Las Vegas and California. He has shared a stage with many comics, including Robert Schimmel, Doug Stanhope, Loni Love, Mark Cordes, Reno Collier, Lisa Landry, Thai Rivera, Bryan Callen, Monique Marvez, Bert Kreischer and D.L. Hughley. 2014 TCA Juried Biennial: Copper at the TCA

This exhibition coincides with the seven-year anniversary of the opening of the TCA (Sept. 9, 2007). The exhibition features works on copper, art made of copper and artists inspired by copper, a tradition for seventh anniversaries. A panel of nationally recognized artists, curators and community members selected 22 Arizona artists from a wide array of visual art traditions, including bronze casting, painting, ceramics, etching, quilt making and jewelry. The overall exhibition is a celebration of copper as a medium as well as a prominent symbol of Arizona history. Free admission.

Las Noches de las Luminarias

Las Noches de las Luminarias at Desert Botanical Garden

Location: Desert Botanical Garden

Las Noches de las Luminaras at Desert Botanical Garden, presented by the Arizona Republic, is one of the most treasured holiday events in the Phoenix area. For 16 evenings in November and December, the Garden is even more beautiful with 8,000 hand-lit luminarias and ten musical groups performing throughout the event. This event will take place on the following evenings: November 28-29, December 5,6, 12, 13, 19-23 and 26-30. Tickets are on sale for members on Sept. 15 and the general public on Sept. 28.
