Tempe, Ariz – January 11, 2013 – It’s the most wonderful time of year again. It's time for visitors to pack their bags, put on their sunglasses and bring plenty of sunscreen. Cactus League Spring Training is rounding third and the Tempe Tourism Office is here to help baseball fans hit their spring training trips out of the park.
Located just minutes from the heart of downtown Phoenix, Tempe is in the middle of all the spring training action, making it the perfect home base. The Cactus League has over 15 Major League teams, playing in 10 stadiums in more than 200 games this spring. The season begins on February 22 and games continue through March 30. Visit www.tempebaseball.com to see team schedules, stadium maps and ticket information. Game tickets can be purchased online and are already on sale.
Home to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Tempe Diablo Stadium offers easy access from Tempe hotels, spectacular mountain views and affordable ticket pricing. This year, fans can see the Angels play such teams as the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, Colorado Rockies and the defending World Series Champion San Francisco Giants. Also, the World Baseball Classic team from Italy will be playing in Tempe against the Angels this March. Tickets start at just $12.
Last year, the Cactus League had some of the highest attendance records to date and this season should be no different. Baseball superstar Josh Hamilton will make his Angels debut in Tempe. This former Texas Ranger signed as a free agent with the Angels this winter. Hamilton will join the iconic Albert Pujols, giving the Angels one of the most feared lineups in all of Major League Baseball.
If fans are craving more baseball fun before or after the games, they can explore the “Play Ball: The Cactus League Experience” exhibit at the Arizona Historical Society Museum, located at Papago Park. The 3,000-square foot exhibit includes more than 400 items, showcasing the history of Cactus League Baseball. Visitors can see items from all their favorite Cactus League teams.
The fun in Tempe doesn't end after the final out. Spring training baseball fans can enjoy activities such as shopping, dining and sightseeing at a variety of attractions. The Mill Avenue District in Tempe is the perfect gathering spot, with over 100 shops, restaurants and taverns located along tree-lined, brick sidewalks. Other popular Tempe activities include hiking “A” Mountain or Papago Park, dining and shopping at Tempe Marketplace, sampling ethnic cuisine at one the many locally owned eateries near Arizona State University, seeing a Broadway show at ASU Gammage or bargain hunting at Arizona Mills.
