Arts & Culture

Whether you have a passion for arts and culture, are an occasional theater goer, or your artistic preferences are decidedly fancy or funky, you’ll find something to suit your artistic bent in Tempe.

You’ll discover the visual arts at every turn, from contemporary art to photography to ceramics by major national and international artists at the ASU Art Museum, its Ceramics Research Center in Downtown Tempe and other museums and galleries located on the Arizona State University Tempe Campus. The Gallery at TCA (Tempe Center for the Arts) also displays rotating art exhibitions throughout the year.

While you’re out and about, watch for art in unexpected places, such as the Mill Avenue Post Office windows, Tempe Public Library, and along city streets. Public art is sprinkled throughout the city including Tempe Town Lake, light rail and bus stops, Arizona State University campus and other locations waiting to be discovered by unsuspecting passersby. One of the newest additions to downtown is “She Tempe,” a public art project that was commissioned by the Downtown Tempe Authority. Eight local female artists created custom works of art that are installed on news racks along Mill Avenue. Each news rack has a map so visitors can take a self-guided tour of these unique, colorful works of art.

Curtains go up on Tempe stages with theatre to suit all ages and tastes. This winter and spring, visitors can expect spectacular performances from award-winning Broadway shows at ASU Gammage to choice Childsplay productions for the whole family to Stray Cat Theatre’s edgy indie productions. Upcoming Broadway blockbusters at ASU Gammage include HAMILTON, January 30-February 25; THE KING AND I, March 20-25, 2018 and THE COLOR PURPLE, April 17-22, 2018.  Families will love Childsplay’s production  of The Snowy Day and Other Stories by Ezra Jack Keats at Tempe Center for the Arts, January 21-March 11, 2018.
