House of Tricks in Tempe

Arizona State University, Mill Avenue and the House of Tricks…some things are synonymous with Tempe.

House of Tricks, one of everyone’s favorite Tempe restaurants, is celebrating their 25th anniversary this year. Throughout the years, this charming eatery has been the perfect spot for a lunch with the girls, a romantic evening, a meal with family and friends and a relaxing spot to enjoy a cocktail and appetizers al fresco. The food and service are always impeccable. The outdoor tables are set amongst beautiful trees, fountains and flowers. The indoor dining rooms are cozy and feel as if you’re having dinner at a good friend’s house – a friend who just happens to have fabulous taste in food.

I’ve always had incredible meals at Tricks and I would highly suggest anything that their talented chefs create. But, I do have my favorites. For lunch, I am always torn between the Quiche of the Day, served with a refreshing side salad, the Moroccan Fruit and Chicken Shawarma Salad and the Seared Burrata Caprese Sandwich on Ciabatta Bread. And now, they’ve added a twist on a traditional PB & J, just for grownups. It features Balsamic Strawberries, Pistachio Butter, Arugula, Fennel and Mascarpone Cheese on a Croissant. Brilliant.

At dinner, I crave the Filet Mignon or the Grilled Halibut with Artichoke Beurre Blanc. Or, I could make an entire meal out of the starters, such as the Pecan Smoked Salmon and the Artisan Cheese Plate. And, I’m always tempted by the daily specials.

From 4-6 p.m. at Tricks, they don’t call it Happy Hour. It’s known as the “Hours of Tranquility.” It sounds relaxing just thinking about it. They offer special prices for adult beverages and they feature a menu that features items such as the House of Tricks signature half dozen Korean Style Chicken Wings and the delicious Roasted Poblano, Spinach and Artichoke Dip. If you are in the mood for a small bite before dinner, the assorted cheese plate is always a good choice for splitting while enjoying a glass of wine. Their extensive wine list includes more than 300 selections from around the world and their knowledgeable servers are always more than happy to provide suggestions.

House of Tricks is located at 114 E. Seventh Street, just east of Mill.
