To many, Labor Day symbolizes the last day of summer and the kick start of fall. In Arizona, summer temperatures continue through September, so Labor Day is an extra day off to enjoy the pool or check out some of fun activities that will officially end your summer on a high note.

Labor Day also means school is back in session and pumpkin spice everything is just around the corner. But, before we usher in the fall, here are a few suggestions for things to do in Tempe and Phoenix during Labor Day weekend 2018.

Take a staycation and relax at one of Tempe’s hotels, ranging from suite properties to a mountain-top resort. Enjoy their sparkling pools, get a free breakfast, or use the weekend as a reason to try a restaurant or tavern near your home away from home. The first ASU football game of the season vs. UTSA will be on Saturday, September 1 at 7:30 p.m. Check out the new renovations to Sun Devil Stadium and see the debut of Coach Herm Edwards. Come early and participate in all of the activities happening in Downtown Tempe, including Devils on Mill, a free event on 6th Street in between Mill Avenue and Forest that features food, ASU gear, music and games for fans of all ages. On your walk to the stadium, don’t miss Sparky’s Touchdown Tailgate on College Avenue between 6th and 7th. This pregame event continues the fun with giant backyard games, a photo booth, a selfie station with a giant Sparky and giveaways.

Enjoy a night out at Tempe Marketplace. On Saturday, September 1, the local band Ratio will perform from 7-10 p.m. on the District Stage. Known as one of the best bands in metro Phoenix, Ratio specializes in 60s and 70s funk, jazz, soul and Motown favorites. Tempe Marketplace is also the perfect spot for the kids to cool down at the Splash Pad, located near Barnes & Noble. It’s open daily from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. And, of course, make time for a bit of shopping and dining at places such as H&M, Old Navy, Cost Plus World Market, Thirsty Lion Gastropub & Grill and Lucille’s Smokehouse Bar-B-Que.

Main Event Tempe is always a fun place for a family outing or a date night. Enjoy the newest and classic video games, bowling, laser tag, gravity ropes course, billiards and two restaurant options on site. On Labor Day, Sept. 3, take advantage of their Monday Night Madness. From 4 p.m. to close, choose from three specials for just $10.95 each: All-You-Can-Play Activities, unlimited video game play or a $20 FUNcard good for food and activities.

Labor Day will be your last chance to take advantage of the “Kids Eat Free” summer promotion at Rustler’s Rooste. Kids 10 and under, one per adult, get a free meal from the Kid’s Menu. The whole family can enjoy the beautiful city views from this mountain top location, the tin slide and live music nightly.

Everyone loves a good deal and Arizona Mills will celebrate the holiday weekend with their annual Arizona Mills Labor Day sale. You’ll find savings of up to 70% at some of your favorite retailers. Make a day of it and take a break from shopping to visit SEA LIFE Arizona Aquarium, LEGOLAND Discovery Center Arizona, Tilt Studio or the Harkins theaters.

See a movie at Alamo Drafthouse, the hip new movie theater located at Lakeshore Drive and Baseline Road. They show new movies and classics, accompanied by a tasty food menu and lots of cocktail and beer options, all served to you as you’re sitting in your comfy theater seat.
