We’ve heard rumors about the legendary Matt’s Big Breakfast making its way to Tempe. And, now the wait is over. I went to the brand new Matt’s Big Breakfast at 400 E. Rio Salado Parkway this weekend and you must check it out.
You can’t see this location from the street, so be the coolest in your crew by knowing exactly where it is. From Rio Salado Parkway, just west of Rural, turn north into the main entrance to the State Farm/Marina Heights development right across from Sun Devil Stadium. Turn left once you reach the end of the driveway. Matt’s faces north in the middle of the complex. You can’t see it from Rio Salado, but you’ll find it easily once you’re in Marina Heights. Look for their bright orange sign and large patio.
If you love the menu at the other Matt’s Big Breakfast locations, you won’t be disappointed. The same thick cut bacon, fluffy pancakes with maple syrup, omelets and other faves are on the Tempe menu too. I highly recommend their Belgian waffle (it comes with bacon!) or the “Skinny,” an egg white scramble with Gruyere, organic spinach and chicken apple sausage served with a side salad. They serve breakfast all day and also offer lunch items beginning at 11 a.m. Lunch options include a BLT (again with their out of this world bacon), a butter burger, bowl of chili, and egg salad sandwich. They have daily specials too.
They source ingredients locally and I love how they give credit to these proprietors on their website. Eating at Matt’s, you can try food from places such as The Pork Shop of Queen Creek, Hickman’s Family Farms, McClendon’s Select Citrus, Wildflower Bread Company and Schreiner’s Fine Sausage.
Their service was top notch during my visit. Our server was fun and attentive and the manager checked on us a couple of times. And, as we were leaving, everyone in the restaurant said goodbye to us. I mean everyone. It was a nice touch.
The Tempe location is much larger than the original in Downtown Phoenix. They have plenty of tables and counter seating and a large outdoor patio. They also have a colorful mural featuring a few Tempe icons that gives it a sense of place.
Tempe’s Matt’s Big Breakfast is not listed on their website yet, but it will be soon. You can say you were there before it gets discovered. Believe me, this place will rise to the ranks of Tempe’s favorite breakfast spots in a flash. Check out their menu and learn more about Matt’s on their website.
