Tempe Public Market Cafe just reopened today after being closed for remodeling for the last month. We loved this place before and we’re happy to report that everything that we loved about Tempe Public Market is still the same, but the volume has been turned up to 11 so to speak. A new mural by artist Gennaro Garcia on the inside is just the beginning of a brighter, funkier interior space that gives this community gathering space even more character.
Located at the corner of Rural and Warner Roads in South Tempe, you’ll notice the new artwork as soon as you pull into the parking lot. We had the chance to interview Garcia and he said that the vibrant “Viva South Tempe” mural next to the entrance was the start of his creative direction for the refreshed space. Once you enter, you’ll notice how he has carried that theme throughout the space.
We also chatted with Chef Rene Andrade on their opening weekend, and he talked about how anyone can cook, but it means so much more when the culinary team cooks with their hearts. We couldn’t agree more. From the management and chefs to the waitstaff, everyone here is super friendly and you can tell that they really believe in both their concept and their food. That little bit extra is really important. It adds positive energy and makes this restaurant an awesome gathering spot for visitors and locals alike.
Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, this community cafe serves fresh food crafted with seasonal ingredients sourced mostly from local and organic farms. During breakfast and lunch, you’ll order at the counter, which is perfect for diners who have a busy day ahead. Starting at 3 p.m., the restaurant offers full-service dining. This restaurant offers a cozy, yet trendy atmosphere. I especially love the large outdoor patio with both misters for summer, and heaters and a large fireplace for winter. They’ve added a new patio cover that provides even more shade on summer days and the furniture outside has also been revamped with colorful cushions and more artwork. There are tables for two and larger tables for gathering with friends old and new.
If you’ve been a regular customer of Tempe Public Market Café, you’ll be happy to know that some of the most popular dishes are still available.
For breakfast, you can still order the Devil’s Mess (scrambled eggs with Schreiner’s chorizo, picked fresno chiles, onions and spinach served with tortillas and Ghost Ranch salsa) and the vegetable forward Frittata served with Noble bread. New menu items include the Bodega Sandwich, a Noble bread buttermilk bun topped with scrambled eggs, applewood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese and calabrese pepper aioli, and the gorgeous Noble Fresh Toast, served with seasonal fruit, mascarpone whipped cream and local honey syrup.
During lunch and dinner, the beloved AZ Burger with green chiles, the Crispy Chicken Sandwich and the Superfood Salad and their pizzas are still standouts. But, at dinner, you’ll want to venture out and try some of the new additions including a hearty and delicious Beef Lasagna, Udon Noodles and Pan Seared Salmon. We also tried the intriguing Vegan Ceviche with a variety of picked vegetables that are almost too pretty to eat. Another new item is the BLT Salad. Is it a salad, a bruschetta, or maybe the best of both? I didn’t know that I needed Noble bread topped with applewood smoked bacon, heirloom tomatoes, mozzarella, basil, fire roasted bell peppers and a pine nut gremolata, but it’s one of the dishes that I keep thinking about days after I tried it.
The pastry chef, L.T. Smith, has also upped the ante on the baked goods. The new space even has a larger pastry case to accommodate everything that he and his team create. There’s a vegan and gluten free chocolate muffin that is so good, you wouldn’t even know that it is so diet-friendly. Muffins and breads range from morning glory to zucchini and the cookies are almost too numerous to mention. But, if you’re up for something sweet and spicy at the same time, grab one of the 4C cookies with a subtle heat from chile. And, for an appetizer at dinner, don’t miss the House Pretzels that are baked and flash fried and served with cheese sauce and whole grain mustard sauce.
The Public Market team added brunch on Saturday and Sunday with an expanded menu and drink specials from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. They have daily happy hour with specials on food from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and drink specials from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. And again, counter service is available Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., with full-service dining from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
