The Spirit of Tempe

Welcome to a city that champions diversity, equity & inclusion

Tempe’s philosophy is simple: Everyone belongs here. Across the board, local officials, businesses, organizations and residents take great pride in being a part of a welcoming and inclusive community that continues to lead with progressive ideas and programs that are shaping the future for all. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning to experience more, you’ll discover that the true spirit of Tempe lies in its people — a melting pot of stories, cultures and connections — who look forward to welcoming you.

“WE HOPE YOU ENJOY TEMPE’S INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY SPIRIT, WHERE RACE, RELIGION, AGE, GENDER, SEXUAL ORIENTATION, DISABILITIES AND COUNTRY OF ORIGIN ARE CELEBRATED AND WELCOMED.”

Tempe Mayor Corey Woods

Tempe Tourism Office Land Acknowledgement Statement

Tempe Tourism Office Land Acknowledgement Statement

The Tempe Tourism Office acknowledges that present-day Tempe is the historical and ancestral homeland of Native peoples, including the O’Odham (known as Pima), Piipaash (known as the Maricopa) and their ancestors, who we often refer to as the area’s original inhabitants. We also recognize the continued connection between the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, the Gila River Indian Community and the land today.

In January 2021, the Mayor and Council approved a resolution commemorating the historical and cultural significance of the historic homelands in Tempe of the O’Odham, Piipaash and their ancestors. Read the resolution here. Similarly, the City of Tempe’s Land Acknowledgement Statement can be viewed here.
