Top 5 Tempe Breakfast Spots

My list started with just five, but Tempe has added a few out-of-this-world breakfast spots that just HAD to be added – so here’s my improved list. Trust me – you won’t be disappointed is trying any of these delicious breakfast restaurants!

1. Matt’s Big Breakfast | 400 E. Rio Salado Pkwy., Tempe, AZ 85281
As the name suggests, plan to walk out with a full happy tummy when dining at Matt’s Big Breakfast. Offering a simple hearty menu, it makes for easy pickings for breakfast, brunch or lunch. You can never go wrong with an omelette here or the made-from-scratch griddlecakes. Matt’s is located on the south side of Tempe Town Lake off Rio Salado Parkway.
MUST-TRY DISH: The Hog & Chick

2. Daily Jam | 310 S. Mill Ave., Tempe, AZ 85281
This spot, located in Downtown Tempe off of Mill Ave. and 3rd St., offers a fun casual atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating, and of course has great food. My favorite, so far, are the egg sandwiches. I also always LOVE to devour their Red Velvet Waffles.  I definitely would recommend their chai tea lattes…delish!

3. Tempe Public Market Cafe | 8749 S. Rural Rd., Tempe, AZ 85284
Located in south Tempe, Tempe Public Market has quickly made its mark on the local dining scene. This casual and colorful spot is welcoming and showcases the menu displayed up high for everyone to see. So far, I’ve loved everything I’ve tried, so go for it and order whatever your stomach desires! I’ll also add that anything from the pastry case is a great decision.
MUST-TRY DISH: Noble French Toast

4. Chompies | 1160 E. University Dr., Tempe, AZ 85281
This New York style delicatessen offers breakfast all day long, and the options and portions here are plentiful! Their omelettes are heaven, and so are the sweeter options! I particularly love the whole grain pancakes. Find Chompie’s on University Dr. between Rural Rd. and Dorsey Ln.
MUST-TRY DISH: Banana Nut Pancakes

5. Crêpe Bar | 7520 S. Rural Rd., Tempe, AZ 85283
This charming crêpe bar started as an innovative food truck that found success quickly catching the eye of many and since 2012, I’ve been delighted to head there and try their seasonally fresh menu.  I’m always inspired by owner’s Jeff Kraus’ tattoo of a Nutella jar on his arm when I can’t quite decide what I want. I usually snag both sweet and savory crêpes to share with a friend.
MUST-TRY DISH: Chilaquiles + Second Time Banana Crepe (I told you, I can never pick just one)

6. First Watch | 111 W. University Dr., Tempe, AZ 85281
First of all, the coffee here is amazing. Now that we have that covered, the food is also delicious. They have a good variety of options here, with heavier filling meals, and lighter options also, so everyone is happy. The power bowls and the avocado toast are my two favorite menu items.

7. Snooze, an A.M. Eatery | 615 S. College Ave. #103, Tempe, AZ 85281
Great food and a trendy atmosphere make this place a treat every time. At Snooze, guests are tempted by from-scratch menu items such as a choose-your-own flight of fluffy pancakes or house-made breakfast pot pie smothered in rosemary sausage gravy. Snooze is located on College Ave. and 6th St. in downtown Tempe, just steps from ASU.
MUST-TRY DISH: Bella! Bella! Benny!

8. Sweetest Season Artisan Eatery | 1385 E. Guadalupe Rd., Tempe, AZ 85283
The charming Sweetest Season Bakery and Cafe is located on Guadalupe Rd. and McClintock Dr.  Their menu has lots of flavorful breakfast and lunch creations. They have incredible waffles and small plates for a quick bite to eat but I can always go for a great Bagel & Lox and their menu item, French Connection, is a great play on that featuring capers, smoked salmon, cream cheese on what they explained to me as a “fancy hash brown” (no bagel… what?!). Delish!
MUST-TRY DISH: French Connection

9. Mark’s Cafe | 6340 S. Rural Rd. #120, Tempe, AZ 85283
Located on Rural Rd. and Guadalupe Rd., this cozy cafe is known for delicious food and a cozy welcoming environment. The eggs Benedict are a must try and the biscuits are light and fluffy. Make sure to get a cup of coffee while you’re there too!

10. Harlow’s Cafe | 1021 W. University Dr., Tempe, AZ 85281
Located near ASU on University and Hardy Dr., this cafe has been a classic neighborhood gathering spot for almost 30 years now. Its old school charm and amazing food make for a great combination! My favorites are the eggs benedict or the huevos rancheros.

11. Scramble | 1120 E. Baseline., Tempe, AZ 85283
One of the newest additions to the Tempe breakfast scene is Scramble, a quick casual spot on Baseline and Lakeshore Drive, next to Alamo Drafthouse. They use fresh local ingredients and they offer lots of vegan and gluten friendly menu items. Dogs are welcome on their patio.
MUST-TRY DISH: Brizza – breakfast pizzas with a variety of toppings on hand tossed dough with hollandaise and scrambled eggs

12. Morning Squeeze | 690 S. Mill Ave., Tempe, AZ 85281
This cheery and bright restaurant in Downtown Tempe serves up an endless array of pancakes, omelets, egg dishes and wait for it…breakfast items for dogs. Yep, you heard that right, four-legged friends are welcome on their patio. So much so that they have their own menu. The chowhound scramble is my pup’s favorite.
MUST-TRY DISH: Bananas Foster the People waffle

13. Oink | 1701 E. Warner Rd., Tempe, AZ 85284
Located in south Tempe, on the corner of McClintock and Warner, breakfast lovers will love this place, bacon lovers will go nuts for this place. This restaurant is known for their variety of delicious bacon offerings, which can be added to any of their yummy breakfast or lunch dishes. In fact, if you just can’t decide, order the Flight of Bacon, which includes all eight of their featured bacon varieties.
