The ASU School of Music commemorates the 50th Anniversary of ASU Gammage with a blockbuster concert celebrating the dedication of the building in 1964. The ASU Concert Jazz Band welcomes patrons before the Wind Orchestra performs music by Ingolf Dahl and other leading American composers. The ASU Symphony Orchestra and combined choirs offer music by Bach, Beethoven and Strauss, whose music was played by The Philadelphia Orchestra and Eugene Ormandy at the grand opening concert in 1964.

The award-winning author and translator, Bill Porter, visits with his newest books a travelogue of China’s Yellow River and a translated volume of Mountain Poems . For the past twenty years, Bill Porter has lectured at many of the major universities in the US, England and Germany on Chinese history, culture, poetry, and religion. His translations of Chinese texts have been awarded two NEA translation fellowships, a PEN translation award, the inaugural Asian Literature Award of the American Literary Translators Association, and more recently a Guggenheim Fellowship.

The ASU Art Museum is the recipient of six new works by artist Andy Warhol, a gift from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. These original Warhol screenprints will be on view in the lobby of the ASU Art Museum until September 13, 2014. ASU Art Museum Hours Tuesday: During academic semesters 11 a.m. – 8 p.m.; Summer hours: 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Wednesday–Saturday: 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Additional educator hours by appointment: Mondays and before 11 a.m. Tuesday–Thursday Closed: Sunday, Monday and holidays The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts was established after Warhol’s death in 1987. In accordance with Warhol’s will, the foundation has given prints to many institutions across the country to ensure “that the many facets of Warhol’s complex oeuvre are both widely accessible and properly cared for.” In 2008, the ASU Art Museum received 155 photographs by Andy Warhol from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, part of the Andy Warhol Photographic Legacy Program, which donated over 28,500 photographs to educational institutions across the United States.

Tickets for Tempe Comedy Concert Series shows can be purchased here. September 5th: Class Clowns Tony Vicich brings his long-running stand-up comedy show, Class Clowns, to TCA. This is the show where it all starts. Comics have gone from Class Clowns shows all the way to Last Comic Standing, Jimmy Kimmel Live and more.  See the show that has taken comics from their first stage experience to national prominence. September 12th: Boomer Nichols  Boomer Nichols has appeared on hundreds of stages nationwide from New York, New Jersey and Florida all the way to Arizona, New Mexico, Las Vegas and California. He has shared a stage with many comics, including Robert Schimmel, Doug Stanhope, Loni Love, Mark Cordes, Reno Collier, Lisa Landry, Thai Rivera, Bryan Callen, Monique Marvez, Bert Kreischer and D.L. 2014 TCA Juried Biennial: Copper at the TCA

This exhibition coincides with the seven-year anniversary of the opening of the TCA (Sept. 9, 2007). The exhibition features works on copper, art made of copper and artists inspired by copper, a tradition for seventh anniversaries. A panel of nationally recognized artists, curators and community members selected 22 Arizona artists from a wide array of visual art traditions, including bronze casting, painting, ceramics, etching, quilt making and jewelry. The overall exhibition is a celebration of copper as a medium as well as a prominent symbol of Arizona history. Free admission.

Las Noches de las Luminaras at Desert Botanical Garden, presented by the Arizona Republic, is one of the most treasured holiday events in the Phoenix area. For 16 evenings in November and December, the Garden is even more beautiful with 8,000 hand-lit luminarias and ten musical groups performing throughout the event. This event will take place on the following evenings: November 28-29, December 5,6, 12, 13, 19-23 and 26-30. Tickets are on sale for members on Sept. 15 and the general public on Sept. 28.
