Tempe events include the Fourth Annual Juneteenth Celebration at Tempe History Museum, June 15-16, 2018. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, an important day in history when the last enslaved African Americans in the U.S. were freed. Although Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, it took two and a half years for word to reach as far as Galveston, Texas. Juneteenth marks the day when freedom from slavery became a reality for all African Americans. The Juneteenth Celebration is an opportunity to learn more about this historical day while honoring African American heritage through discussions, performances, displays and informational booths.

On June 15, Dr. Matthew Whitaker will examine the barriers and the obstacles that African-Americans currently face. Dr. Whitaker is an award-winning educator, author and community engagement specialist. His work examines African American history and life, race relations, social movements, cultural competency, equity and inclusion and community partnerships.

The Fourth Annual Juneteenth Celebration will take place on, June 16 from 1–4 p.m. This free family event will be an afternoon filled with music, dance, spoken word, information tables, raffle prizes and food vendors.

All events take place inside the Tempe History Museum and admission is free.
